The driveway is floodlit. Where he stops at the far right corner, it’s a street light. I’ll show this to the sheriff’s deputies tonight because I think there’s a decent chance they know the guy. Nothing taken, though. Shame on me for not locking my car.

I leave my car (2001) unlocked in the driveway most of the time. We live in a lot less dense area, so people walking up the driveway would be pretty bold (100'+ from the road). But mainly because I’d rather someone look through my car and find nothing, than to break the window and find nothing.

I had this happen to me at an apartment I lived at. Someone took my cds out of my car and left it on our picnic table with a bag with a girl’s sweater in it. Nothing taken from either of our cars just my music moved outside and paired with someone’s sweater.
I was a little insulted they didn’t think any of my music was worth taking lol

That’s my theory too, I don’t keep anything valuable in my car. In about 6 years at my current residence, there have been 2 occasions where someone opened a door and looked through the glove box. A lthough I felt a little violated, there was nothing they took. I would have felt a whole lot more violated if I had locked the car and they broke the window to get in haha. On the other hand, chances are they were probably just going through unlocked cars because they are easy targets, so I don’t know what’s better. Either way don’t keep anything of much value in your car!

It’s 2020 and he lives in the god damned United States of America, can’t you buy one of these yet?
I would set him up inside the bushes or maybe on the roof. Laying underneath the car?

At least you can lock your car.
Fintail’s prior owner lost the door key, so the car is always unlocked. Shouldn’t be a worry, as the car slumbers under a cover in a secure gated garage, and there’s nothing of real value in it . However, last year, a prowler got in to the garage, and rummaged through it and the other old cars that are stored there. Dumped out the glove box, made a mess - nothing of real value in the car to take, but they took some trinkets that had sentimental value, including a little pin given to me when I was young by a now-deceased friend of the family, something I kept as kind of a good luck charm for a long time. I could have cried. Funny thing, the trunk was also unlocked of course, with some spare parts and tool s that have minor value - untouched. Lesson learned, now nothing is kept in the car, even if of no value to anyone but me.

When I lived in Baltimore, I learned the best approach there was to lock the doors, but also keep the cabin completely clean and free of visible wires and such. Unlocked cars got broken into, and cars with stuff potentially worth stealing got broken into, but thieves didn’t seem to think it worth the risk to break into cars with nothing visible to take and no indication that something in a storage area might be worth taking.

My van has been rifled a couple of times. First time they took my old click wheel iPod, the second time they took the faceplate to the radio. I talked to the deputy who responded to the neighbor’s call, and the deputy said, “Do check that your front door is locked before you go to bed? Check your cars too.” Ever since, we beep both cars in the driveway before bed. This is becoming a big problem in my neighborhood, and people keep complaining that their cars were broken into. No, they weren't. You left it unlocked.

hate that... honestly, I’m a fan of leaving a vehicle unlocked with nothing in it whenever possible, at least that way they are less likely to break out a window or punch a door lock... The last time my car was riffled through the guy (or gal?) didn’t get anything and accidentally dropped their fancy little LED flashlight they were using, so I actually came out ahead! I do also have a motion sensor spot light in front of our place and that does seem to help some too...

My brother’s GTI was parked at a Baltimore light rail station several years ago. In the middle of the day, someone smashed the wind shield (seriously, the hardest way to get into a car) to steal a basic model Whistler radar detector — literally a $25 Walmart special, probably worth $5 on the street. There was blood and hair found on the dash. That’s motivation.
(and his defroster blew bits of glass into his face for years after that)
